We like to stretch out the celebration. Why celebrate Easter for one weekend, when you can celebrate for two!? It makes sense!!
So, the weekend before Easter we had our 3rd annual Easter Egg Hunt with a great group of friends (we really should come up with an official name for this hunt). It started the first year with 5 families, consisting of 5 boys, all one and two years old (and one tiny baby who couldn't quite participate yet). It was supposed to be at a park, but due to the lovely, dirt blowing wind, we moved the whole affair to my house (this was 2010 and I was about 9 or 10 weeks pregnant with the quads, I remember speculating on the increase the next year). The very next year, we had the same 5 families, plus one new one and we had added NINE babies (this is not including the tiny baby that had been present the year before). We were up to 5 boys between 2 and 3, with 10 babies, all born within one year of each other, the oldest having just turned one and the youngest being about 2 months old!! Every family had had a baby, we had four and one family had twins! Man does our group know how to multiply!! We had it at our house again. This year . . . all the babies were toddlers and would be participating, so we decided it was time to move to a larger venue, so we chose a public park. Then we decided: larger venue, why not more kids!! We had two regulars who couldn't make it this year and a couple of new invites that weren't able to come either, but we still ended up with 3 "big" boys (3 and 4 year olds) and 10 one year olds!!! If everyone had made it, it would have really been insane and next year we hope they all can! We have the best time and this year we even upped the ante with a few games for the older kids!
We started the Egg Hunt fun with a picnic, then put out sidewalk chalk, giant rolls of butcher paper and bubbles to occupy kids while we "hid" the eggs (i.e. threw the eggs in the grass field). Last year we did some confetti eggs (yes, in our backyard) and the kids loved it, so I stuck with those this year because I didn't need anymore candy at my house. Other moms did some candy filled eggs and a some filled with small trinkets. The kids had a great time. Gage was picking up eggs before we were even done putting them all out. He had an armful against his chest because he didn't have a basket yet. Kynlee really couldn't care less about egg hunting. Jackson of course cleaned up! Westin wandered and picked a few up here and there in true Westin fashion and Brooklyn fluctuated as to what held her attention. The kids were all hysterical. There were toddlers "sharing" their eggs. Taking them out of their own baskets to put them in someone else's and handing them to another kid. Some toddlers were more interested in putting baskets on their heads. It was so much fun to just look around at the joyous chaos!!
After hunting, we sorted eggs into plastic and confetti (there were over 10 dozen confetti eggs, we don't mess around we come to have fun!). We had one little toddler friend who LOVED the confetti eggs and just happily sat crushing them between his fingers and watching all the stuff come out. It was great. Gage really liked them too. He wanted to crush them. Westin couldn't quite figure out how to get the confetti out. He finally started poking a finger through the tissue paper and dumping. Kynlee was a little unsure of the mess and Brooklyn seemed to enjoy herself. Jackson of course loved getting everyone, but was not too keen on people getting him! Typical! It was awesome!!
Post Egg Hunt and Confetti fight, we let the kids play. All the other toddlers/kids thought our choo choo wagon was the coolest thing ever. You would have thought it was a train at a small town carnival or something! They all wanted to ride in it. One of my friends comments that she thought it was so funny that to their kids it was a ride and for us it was a way to transport our kids! Too funny! I was glad it could provide entertainment! My kids actually really love it too. Thanks so much to the family that gave it to us!!
While toddlers toddled, the big boys got to have some fun. They had egg races and sack races. I thought that maybe putting 3 and 4 year old boys in sacks and asking them to hop might end in disaster, but they did really well. As for the egg/spoon races . . . fortunately I was smart enough to boil the eggs or it would have been MESSY!
I have to say that this event has become one of my favorite of the year. I look forward to it every year! We are so fortunate to have so many friends with little ones the same age as ours. It makes life fun!!
